The Plum Program

Supporting men with prostate cancer

Exercise Physiologists play an integral role in supporting and optimising recovery following cancer diagnosis. Research has shown exercise to be beneficial for recovery both during and after treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Exercise is effective in preparing the body for such treatments and has significant benefits in the recovery process.

It’s estimated that 1 in 5 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the time they are 85 years old. The psychological burden whilst going through treatment can be profound, and as such, the team at Atrium Exercise Physiology are here to support. The Plum Program is a support and exercise group for men going through or recovering from prostate cancer. The program is not just limited to those with prostate cancer, however, and anyone is welcome to join. As a community, we can stand tall and support each other through life’s various challenges.

The Exercise Physiologists at Atrium Exercise Physiology have been supporting Movember since 2016, which aims to raise awareness and funding for prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. We also recently completed ‘The Long Run for Prostate Cancer’ where we each ran 72km throughout the month of September 2022. ‘The Long Run’ aims to raise awareness and funds to help men survive prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men. Sadly, 1 in 5 men will develop anxiety or depression as a result of their diagnosis, yet 72% of men will not seek help for it. Together we can ensure these men are supported for the long run.
